A worked example: four friends, three nights

Four friends share a condo for three nights. Three of them ski or snowboard, and two of those rent gear. One spends the days at the lodge.

The trip costs $1,780.00 in all, but not the same for everyone:

        • Driver: shares cost $447.50, paid $990.00, so gets back $542.50.
        • Skier: shares cost $522.50, paid $480.00, so owes $42.50.
        • Snowboarder: shares cost $522.50, paid $150.00, so owes $372.50.
        • Lodge fan: shares cost $287.50, paid $160.00, so owes $127.50.

Settling up: Snowboarder pays Driver $372.50; Lodge fan pays Driver $127.50; Skier pays Driver $42.50.

        Questions

How do you split ski trip costs when not everyone skis?

Split shared costs like lodging, gas and food between everyone, and split lift tickets and rentals only between the people who use them. Then net it all out.

What if one person bought everyone's lift tickets?

Add the tickets as one expense paid by them and tick everyone who got a ticket. The others pay them back in the settle-up.

Can we add costs during the trip?

Yes. Keep the page's link: it holds the whole split. Send the newest link to the group after each change.

What if someone came for fewer nights?

Use the split by nights calculator for the lodging, then add each person's lodging amount here.

        Is anything stored?

Not until you save a shared link. A saved group is encrypted in your browser first, so we store only what we cannot read.
