Split a group gift
One person bought the gift, someone else got the card. See who pays whom.
Free. No account. Nothing to install.
A worked example: four people, one gift
Four people chip in for a gift. The organizer buys it for $180.00, and the coworker picks up the card and wrapping for $12.00. The total is $192.00, so each person's share is $48.00.
- Organizer: paid $180.00, so gets back $132.00.
- Coworker: paid $12.00, so owes $36.00.
- Neighbor: paid $0.00, so owes $48.00.
- Cousin: paid $0.00, so owes $48.00.
Settling up takes 3 payments: Neighbor pays Organizer $48.00; Cousin pays Organizer $48.00; Coworker pays Organizer $36.00.
The person the gift is for isn't in the group, so they pay nothing. If someone gives a smaller amount, add their part as its own expense shared only by them, or leave them unticked on the gift and add what they chipped in separately.
How to use it
- Step 1Add everyone who is chipping in. Leave out the person the gift is for.
- Step 2Add the gift and who paid for it.
- Step 3Add the card, wrapping or delivery, and who paid.
- Step 4Copy the summary and send it to the group.
Questions
How do you split a group gift?
Add up everything the gift cost, the card and delivery included, and divide by the number of people giving. Anyone who paid for part of it gets that back from the others.
Does the person getting the gift pay a share?
No. Leave them out of the group. Only the people chipping in share the cost.
What if someone wants to give less?
Untick them on the gift and add their amount as a separate expense shared only by them. The others share the rest.
Can we send the money through Allsquare?
No. It shows who pays whom. Pay each other however your group usually does.
Is anything stored?
Not until you save a shared link. A saved group is encrypted in your browser first, so we store only what we cannot read.
