A worked example: one month of shared bills

Three roommates pay the shared bills as they come. The streaming plan is shared by two of them; everything else by all three.

        BillPaid byShared byAmount
        ElectricFront roomall three$96.30
        InternetBack roomall three$70.00
        GroceriesLoftall three$141.75
        StreamingBack roomBack room and Loft$18.00
        Cleaning suppliesFront roomall three$32.40

The month's bills come to $358.45. Each person's balance is what they paid minus their shares:

        • Front room: paid $128.70, share $113.49, so gets back $15.21.
        • Back room: paid $88.00, share $122.48, so owes $34.48.
        • Loft: paid $141.75, share $122.48, so gets back $19.27.

Settling up takes 2 payments: Back room pays Loft $19.27; Back room pays Front room $15.21.

To keep a running tab, tap "Save a shared link" and send it to the apartment's group chat: everyone adds bills to the same list, and it is encrypted in your browser before it is saved.

        Questions

Do I need to download an app to split bills?

No. Allsquare works in any phone or computer browser. Nobody needs to install anything or make an account.

How do we keep a running tab through the month?

Save a shared link and send it to the apartment. Everyone who opens it adds bills to the same list, and changes save as you go.

What if one roommate doesn't share a bill?

Untick them for that bill. It is split only between the people ticked.

Does it move money between us?

No. It shows who should pay whom and how much. You pay each other however you usually do.

Can you read our names and amounts?

No. Until you save, nothing is sent to us. A saved group is encrypted in your browser with a key that only your link holds, after the # sign, which browsers never send to a website. We store only what we cannot read.
