A worked example: dinner for five
Five people eat out. The food and drinks come to $184.00 and the tax is $16.33. They leave a 20% tip on the bill before tax.
- Tip: 20% of $184.00 is $36.80.
- Total: $184.00 + $16.33 tax + $36.80 tip is $237.13.
- Split five ways: $237.13 ÷ 5 is $47.43, which doesn't divide to the cent: 3 people pay $47.43 and 2 pay $47.42.
Rounded up to whole dollars, each person pays $48.00, and the extra $2.87 goes to the tip.
When people ordered different things
An even split is quickest when everyone ordered about the same. When orders differ a lot, or one person paid the whole check, use the group splitter: add each item with the people who shared it, and it shows who pays whom.
How to use it
- Step 1Type the bill before tip.
- Step 2Type the tax from the receipt.
- Step 3Pick the tip percent.
- Step 4Type how many people are splitting, and round up if you like.
Questions
How do you split a bill with tip?
Work out the tip on the bill, add it and the tax to the bill, and divide the total by the number of people. The calculator does it in one step and keeps the cents exact.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
This calculator tips on the amount before tax, as many people do. To tip on the total after tax, type the bill with tax included and leave the tax at 0.
What if the total doesn't divide evenly?
Some people pay one cent more than others, so the parts add up to the exact total. Or tick "Round each share up" and the extra goes to the tip.
Can I split it when people ordered different things?
Use the group splitter on the home page for that: add each item and tick who shared it.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It works in your browser, and nothing is saved or sent.
