Each person's monthly income

A worked example: $2,000.00 rent on two incomes

A couple pays $2,000.00 a month in rent. One earns $6,000.00 a month and the other $4,000.00. Together they earn $10,000.00.

    1. Each person's share of the income: 6,000 ÷ 10,000 is 60%, and 4,000 ÷ 10,000 is 40%.
    2. Each pays that share of the rent: $1,200.00 and $800.00.
    3. Both pay 20% of what they earn: $1,200.00 of $6,000.00, and $800.00 of $4,000.00.

Split evenly, each would pay $1,000.00: 25% of the smaller income and 17% of the larger. Some people mix the two methods, splitting part of the rent evenly and the rest by income. Set "Part split evenly" to do that.

The same math works for any shared bill: groceries, utilities or a car payment. Use take-home pay or pay before taxes, whichever you agree on, as long as everyone uses the same one.

    Questions

How do you split rent by income?

Add up everyone's income. Each person's share of the rent is their income divided by the total. Someone who earns 60% of the household's income pays 60% of the rent.

Should we use income before or after taxes?

Either works if everyone uses the same kind. Take-home pay is closer to what each person can spend; pay before taxes is easier to compare.

Can we split part evenly and part by income?

Yes. Set "Part split evenly" to a percent. That part is split equally and the rest by income.

Does this work for more than two people?

Yes. Add a row for each person; the shares always add up to the full amount.

    Is my income saved anywhere?

No. What you type stays on this page in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent.
